BCG vaccine
The Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination is the tuberculosis (TB) vaccine.
Who is the BCG vaccination for?
The BCG vaccine is notably more effective in infants and young children when compared to the efficacy observed in adults. This vaccine offers over 70% protection against severe forms of tuberculosis, particularly including the extrapulmonary TB that can affect the brain.
Unlike other vaccines commonly given in the muscle, the BCB vaccine is given via an injection just beneath the skin on the upper arm.
The BCG vaccine plays a crucial role in safeguarding the health and well-being of vulnerable populations, contributing to the broader efforts in public health to combat this serious infectious disease.. If the child has been overseas prior to the BCG vaccine, they may require the Mantoux Skin Test to assess of possible prior TB exposure.
Please call the clinic for further information.
Plan for the BCG vaccine at least 3 months before travel.
